Colossal Kelp  Dive into the wonderful world of the kelp forest and meet the amazing creatures that call this underwater forest home. Students learn about the basic structure of the kelp plant and discover how animals are adapted to survive in the kelp forest through hands-on interaction with live animals and kelp.
Fascinating Fish 
Starfish? Jellyfish? Catfish? Rockfish? What makes a fish, a fish? Through dress-up and hands-on exploration of the Pacific mackerel, students will investigate the unique characteristics of fish and learn how shape, size, and movement help them survive in their ocean habitat.
Tide-Pool Treasures  Sea urchins, hermit crabs, snails, and sea stars are just a few of the creatures that call the tide pool home. Through the use of puppets and live animals, students will explore the world of tide pools and learn how these creatures find food, protect themselves, and move about in their ever-changing tide-pool habitat.

Water Works Are you ready to get wet and wild? Through hands-on investigation and interactions at Wonders of Water play stations, students will explore water’s unique properties, discover the power of water in motion, and learn what it means to conserve this precious resource.
Shark Survivor¬How do sharks survive challenges of nature and those presented by humans? The live shark displays provide an ideal living classroom for students to explore the challenges sharks face and how they have adapted to survive for more than 400 million years. Students will tour shark exhibits to observe live shark behavior and adaptations and use hands-on models to discover sharks’ unique design.
Self-Guided VisitDiscover an ocean full of adventure at Birch Aquarium. Lead your classes along the Pacific coast as they explore the exhibits of cool northern waters all the way down to tropical coral reefs in Baja, Mexico. Make sure to stop by the tide-pool plaza, the outdoor shark display, and Wonders of Water and Feeling the Heat: The Climate Challenge exhibits.
Beach Teach (1st grade only)Explore the Ecological Preserve of La Jolla Shores beach in this fun, hands-on field science program. Each program is customized based on tide and weather conditions and student grade level. Please call for available dates.

BEACH INVESTIGATION (subject to tides)Using clues found right under their toes, students will learn about the life surrounding the sandy beach. Participants will dig in the sand to understand how animals use their adaptations to survive in this changing environment. They also will learn about the local kelp forests and its residents.
TIDEPOOLING (subject to tides)Life in the tide pools is no day at the beach! Students will learn about life on the rocky shore and the special adaptations needed to survive in this harsh environment. They’ll also take a sneak peek at how animals move, camouflage, find food, and hold on in the tide pools.
