The use of seahorses for traditional medicines, aquarium pets, and curios has become a big business. An extremely profitable international trade has developed, but now the numbers taken may well be unsustainable. The combination of direct catch, incidental catch in trawl nets, and habitat destruction has placed seahorse populations at risk.
